| [ | feeling |
| | crazy | ] | I apologize for the lack of screen caps. I didn't rewatch Martin, and I rewatched Assault on Precinct 13 using netflix's watch instantly feature, so I couldn't cap the films.
In my attempts to come off as patronizing as possible, I've defended my canon, and I've even quoted myself defending our canon, so now I'm going to defend canons just. A canon is (or should be ) more than just an individual's taste (or the amalgamation of a group's tastes). A canon is also a lesson plan or a map or a form of film criticism simply in the films that it highlights. Some things should be noted with others in mind. People who don't have the same inclinations as us, who may take a different path, but still would love a couple pointers. A simple list of favorites can become onanistic. We should always try our damnedest to account for as many different entry points into the art of film as possible.
I love George Romero and John Carpenter. And my favorite films of theirs, respectively, are Day of the Dead and The Fog. Yet while both of those films were cut in the previous round, I'm choosing to defend Martin and Assault on Precinct 13 instead.
Why?
Because unlike Ratatouille and The Music Man, I feel like my excitement isn't steering the boat (even if it's still occasionally powering the engine). Because I was upset to see them lose, and my gut tells me that they are artofvision films for some reason... Because, most of all, I find myself coming back to them, attempting to reckon with them, and still struggling to get a solid grip...

| a way rushed challenge |
[03 07 10 43 P] |
Especially in contrast to the others posted or that I read tonight. But worse than posting rushed about PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID is not challenging it at all. Hell, I moved to New Mexico because of this movie.

| #173 - Just Little Shit |
[04 07 05 07 A] |

http://anderslovesmaria.reneengstrom.com/2008/07/04/173-just-little-shit/ Jesus I had to cram a lot of dialogue into one page! I should really have broken this up into two pages but no, I am insane and thought 15 panels on an A4 page was a brilliant idea! I think it turned out Ok anyways, but it took some time.
Today is the last day to donate for an original sketch from me, lovingly drawn and sent home to you. Thanks so much everyone that has supported the comic these past 2 weeks. I can’t believe we broke $3000! Insane! I have my work cut out for me in sketches that’s for sure!
Also the hilarious and talented Rebecca Clements and myself have started a thematical sketchblog. It’s pretty funny so you should check it out! This week’s theme is The Fresh Prince of Ghost Manor!

| | Tom Carter - "Skyline Grinder" | ] | Per chance, is anyone here willing/able to share their copy of Tom Carter's "Shepherd at Lexington" or "Monument" recording?
I've been trying to track it down forever, and given the limited run, I don't remotely expect to find a copy available for purchase.
I will happily trade in other music or good karma. ;)
Thanks! |

This is a meme from a couple of weeks back, but I kind of felt like I needed to do something non-comicky for today. I've also been sitting around drawing girls, but none of them really turned out well enough to post.
Anyway, I'm headed to the airport in about five hours, and then I'm off to the East coast for four days of driving, awkward conversation, and... um... I'm sure something else will pop up.
I'm taking my sketchbook and my camera, but I'm thinking my computer needs a couple of days nap. So no comics until Tuesday. Are you guys going to be okay? Don't cry! Stay strong!

I turn 25 in two days. What the hell have I been doing with my life?

[03 07 09 00 P] |

I had my graduation ceremony almost a month ago, and armed with my little B.F.A. I registered for classes as a graduate student soon after that. What a milestone, and a lip-biting one too. Those fears I'd spoken of in April, were later on eclipsed with excitement... and now more recently, those feelings have again been eclipsed - by nerves, which have been there all along but are now only intensified, mainly about wherever my new home will be. I have a bookmarks folder in my browser titled 'Vancouver' and within it is one named 'Possibilities,' as in potential homes. Multiple emails and phone calls and I'm growing more anxious. Sea change sea change sea change, you can't come any quicker! Or rather, sea change, get back, you're coming on too strong! I just want my first apartment to be the best that it can possibly be, nice, with minimal hassles, not too expensive, not too far a commute, but I don't know if that's too much to ask... I'm just getting a bit desperate is what it is. However. Lots of things are generating excitement just as an equal amount of things are contributing to the anxiousness. This was the school I was most intimidated to apply to but when I got the good news, I almost didn't think twice accepting. It was a 'how could I not?' feeling. I'm still intimidated by it, by the program, by what I'll be embarking on (which I'm still working out the blueprints for), but good challenge: here I am. Or, referencing some culinary combat show which I don't actually watch, I'm ready to do battle.

last night grandma died while i hugged her knees. the power was out and the room was lit by candles, the glow from the fire outside illuminating the room. the fire is eating the hills and houses alike, and the air is thick and red with smoke. i told grandma not to afraid. mom and i gathered family treasures to take home. i felt pretty blessed to watch such a loving woman take her last breath. a woman with such bad circulation, the last few days of her life, her body felt so warm. |

| Metropolis "can finally be understood" |
[03 07 07 22 P] |
|
http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2008/07/metropolis-can.html Footage missing from Fritz Lang's 1927 classic Metropolis have been discovered in Buenos Aires.
Upon its initial release, according to Zeitmagazin, "the film flopped with critics and audiences alike. Representatives of the American firm Paramount considerably shortened and re-edited the film. They oversimplified the plot, even cutting key scenes. The original version could only be seen in Berlin until May 1927 – from then on it was considered to have been lost forever."
Now, will someone please find the missing reels of Greed, another commercial debacle?

[03 07 05 32 P] |

I was able to catch Ryan Schultz in a lightweight UFC style fight on HDTV Fight today, he's a hot cubbie, with a very handsome face and hot beard- which is unusal for UFC fighters and definitely for such a young one. He's a bit on the thin side body wise (chicken legs), but the beard makes up for all that ;)
This photo doesn't do him justice, his hair is much shorter now, and his beard fuller. And definitely more built. |
